Passed the Early Education Economic Recovery Program
We know that investing in early childhood education is a vital indicator of long-term educational and economic outcomes for children. That’s why our office worked to successfully secure funding for early childhood education during the pandemic through the Early Education Economic Recovery Program, which provides $25 million in interest-free loans and grants to early education programs to support 10,000 children across the City. San Francisco is home to more than 500 early care programs that will be eligible to receive $15,000 of funding as part of our program.
Mediated the process to reopen schools during the pandemic between San Francisco Unified School District leadership and the United Educators of San Francisco
As a former Education Commissioner, it was essential to me that the City prioritize education recovery efforts following the pandemic and prevent San Francisco students from falling behind permanently. We worked days, nights, and weekends to negotiate the classroom schedules and safety protocols that would allow schools to reopen for the latter part of the 2020-21 academic year. We also successfully assisted in reaching an agreement between SFUSD leadership, UESF, principals, teachers, and families to ensure school reopening for preschoolers, elementary schools students, special ed programs and for after school programming at sites.
