Established the Bayview SAFE Navigation Center
The Navigation Center will move 203 unhoused individuals, many who are locals of the Bayview, towards long-term housing. The Center will be an essential support for District 10 at a time when we have more people living on our streets and seeking services due to an already untenable housing crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis. The site is designed to offer a safe, healthy, and dignified environment for unhoused individuals.
Implemented crucial eviction protections for renters
With an estimated 32,000 San Francisco households who were struggling to keep up with rent during the pandemic—many of whom were in our District—we implemented a citywide eviction ban to provide relief for those renters and families. We were able to not only place a moratorium on all evictions, but also ban late fees and extend payment periods for outstanding rent. In addition, I am proud to have worked with my colleagues on the Board to pass historic legislation that permanently prohibits landlords from evicting tenants for non-payment of rent due to COVID-19.
Advocating to continue our successful Shelter-in-Place hotel program beyond the pandemic
We were able to fill over 2,500 empty hotel rooms during the pandemic, using them to provide emergency shelter for unhoused residents — a proven first step to finding longer-term housing solutions. I’ve since been on the frontlines advocating to continue offering temporary shelter for thousands on the sidewalks — homeless families, unhoused single youth and adults, elderly folks — in the aftermath of the pandemic.
